What is Happening:

On Monday, the House of Representatives passed H.R. 5378, which contains language reauthorizing the Special Diabetes Program for Indians (SDPI) for Fiscal Years (FY) 2024 and 2025 at $170 million a year. This is a $20 million increase from previous funding levels, which have not seen an increase since FY 2004.

Why it Matters:

Currently, SDPI is funded through a Continuing Resolution signed into law on November 16. However, this funding will expire on January 19, 2024. To secure SDPI reauthorization, a bill still needs to pass in the Senate. Failure to reauthorize SDPI will create unnecessary program uncertainty and impact the continuity of care for the patients who depend on this highly effective program.

Resources to Take Action:

Join NIHB's advocacy efforts. Contact your senators and tell them to pass SDPI reauthorization by January 19, 2024. To make your voice heard, you can send a letter to your senators or schedule a visit with them to urge them to reauthorize SDPI.

A sample letter to send to your senators is available here.

Information on how to identify your Congressional representatives and schedule a meeting with them is available here.
